Meet Carbon Smart Wood

The Fin Wall | Bethesda, MD
The Fin Wall, one of Carbon Smart Wood’s first projects, was crafted from small wood pieces usually discarded in milling. This award-winning feature showcases a system with 264 wooden fins of varying heights, designed to move independently and adapt to seasonal changes. It exemplifies sustainable architecture, where functionality and ecological awareness beautifully coalesce.

Since 2009, Intectural has been supplying ambitious designers and builders with innovative materials that match their big ideas. Now, we are excited to announce the arrival of a new material to our portfolio: Carbon Smart Wood. As the name implies, Carbon Smart Wood is driven by the singular mission of supplying wood that is better for people and better for the planet. Carbon Smart Wood targets wood impacted by the four Ds: disease, decay, disaster, and development. They partner with local arborists and millers to rescue and upcycle wood that would otherwise be landfill-bound, and connect buyers with the resulting materials that are net carbon sinks rather than emitters.

Carbon Smart Wood’s aspirations are high: to create a better future by changing minds about how high-quality wood is sourced and transforming supply chains into systems that are more circular, efficient, and sustainable.

Carbon Smart Wood represents the essence of responsible sourcing—by rescuing waste-bound wood, Carbon Smart Wood provides a material that is the very definition of climate-positive and saves an estimated four trees per 1000 board feet. Carbon Smart Wood even funnels 15% of profits into urban forest stewardship, benefiting communities both socially and environmentally by funding tree planting and skill building.
